How to make a passport photo

Every output is generated at 300 DPI — the standard resolution photo printers and print shops expect for sharp results at passport-photo scale.
What this tool does and doesn't guarantee
This tool handles the geometry — exact dimensions, correct aspect ratio, a visual guide for face position and size. It does not verify your photo against the full list of official requirements passport and visa offices actually check: background color (usually plain white or off-white), lighting (no shadows on the face or background), expression (neutral, mouth closed, eyes open), no glasses glare or tinted lenses, and photo recency (most offices require a photo taken within the last 6 months). Getting the size right is necessary but not sufficient — check your destination country's full photo requirements before submitting, especially for a passport application where a rejected photo means a delay.
Why the guide is a guide, not an automatic check
The oval and eye-line overlay is a visual reference, not a face-detection system — it doesn't scan your photo or verify anything automatically. You position and zoom the photo until your face roughly matches the guide's proportions: eyes near the horizontal line, face filling most of the oval without touching its edges. Most official passport photo specs describe head size as a percentage of the photo height (commonly 50-70% depending on the country) — the guide is sized to approximate a reasonable middle of that range, which covers most country requirements without being tuned to one specific country's exact numbers.
The 4×6 print sheet
Passport-sized prints are a niche request most consumer photo printers and pharmacy print kiosks don't offer directly — they're built around standard sizes like 4×6 inches. The print sheet option tiles as many copies of your passport photo as fit onto a single 4×6 sheet (the exact count depends on your chosen size — the US 2×2in preset fits 6 copies per sheet), so you can print through any ordinary photo printing service instead of a specialty passport-photo counter, and get multiple usable copies from one print.
Understanding the sizes
- US / India — 2×2 inches (600×600px at 300 DPI): both countries specify the same physical photo size, with head-size and background requirements that differ slightly between them.
- UK / Schengen area / Australia — 35×45mm: this size is shared across a wide range of European and Commonwealth passport and visa applications.
- Canada — 50×70mm: notably larger than the UK/Schengen size, with its own specific head-size proportions.
- China visa — 33×48mm: a size specific to Chinese visa applications, distinct from the other presets here.
Privacy: what happens to your photo
Every step — cropping, the alignment guide, building the print sheet — runs on the Canvas API in your browser. Your photo is never uploaded. This matters more than usual for a tool handling a photo meant for an identity document: open DevTools → Network while using the tool and you'll see no outbound requests at any point.
